Painting Fabulous Textured Abstracts
(or why the hardware store is your best friend)

A rich, textured surface gives depth and interest to a painting. This workshop teaches you how to use acrylic paint and hardware store supplies to create amazing textured abstract paintings. You'll learn how to create that delicious surface and then make the most of it. Working loosely and intuitively, you'll learn to trust your impulses and be in the moment, developing a dialogue with your painting. Students will emerge with a minimum of two, and possibly more, paintings using different approaches. You'll learn about:

  • texture material and how to apply it
  • using tools, water, and gravity to add paint to the surface
  • a variant on the traditional color wheel, and why this teacher likes it
  • paint transparency and temperature
  • basic types of compositions
  • concepts for what makes a successful painting
  • how to work loosely
  • signing and finishing a painting
  • useful resources

Class size is limited to ten students.

Schedule: May 16 and 17, 2009, 9:30 - 4:30

Location: Gallery 2611, 2611 Broadway, Redwood City, (650) 364 - 2611

About the teacher: Connie Kleinjans grew up in Japan and Hawaii. After majoring in art in college, and needing to make a living, she eventually moving to California to work in high tech. For many years she created theater art in her spare time. Returning to fine art, she stumbled upon using hardware store material to create texture, and began to experiment with ways to use it. Finding a surprising amount of interest in working loosely and with texture, she decided to offer classes. She is represented by Gallery 2611 in Redwood City.
